Scripture Union Daily Guide 13 December 2025 Outline
Imagine how this war could have ended were David fighting alongside Saul? Saul waged war against his faithful servant and lost the help of a great fighter. The Philistines attacked Israel and slew Saul’s sons, Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchi-shua (1 Samuel 31:1-2). In the end, he gave up in despair and took his own life. The truth is that despair is not very far away from anyone who persists in resisting the clear will of God.
What do you think of the action of Saul’s armour-bearer (1 Samuel 31:4-5)? He faced a big dilemma and rightly decided to obey God rather than Saul, his commander-in-chief. How do you decide what action to take when faced with a similar dilemma in your nation, office, school, or family? See how Peter and John handled the dilemma that faced them (Acts 4:18-19; Acts 5:29).
The failure that results from our disobedience to God glorifies Satan (1 Samuel 31:9-10). Even in failure, however, there is still room to honour the Lord, as the people of Jabesh-Gilead did valiantly. They gave Saul a decent burial in return for his kindness in rescuing them from utter disgrace (see 1 Samuel 11:1-11).
Food for Thought
Consistent obedience to God always involves a sacrifice but each obedience will strengthen our faith in God; help us stand out as a witness for our Lord and strengthen us against temptation.
